David Foust Inc : 11.2009 : What is the truth behind a college education? (Think)

Sitting in front of a TV full of Ohio State football, im staring diligently at my computer screen reading a book. Yes a book, an ebook, but still a book. I just finished reading Unleashing the Idea Virus by Seth Godin. After a 197 pages; I did skim some, who doesn’t? i feel smarter! 197 pages was worth more to me than any marketing class I have ever taken!(If there was something that shown my amazement more than an exclamation point i would have used it). An entire undergrad education was just out-shined by 197 pages of FREE information. Thats right, FREE. Lets do the math:

Marketing Classes Total: 10
Cost per book:$100 (give or take a few dollars)

Thats $1000 dollars of books that i have wasted my money on over the past 6 years (good thing my education was free). Seriously, I never read any of those books I paid for, why should i? I passed every class with an A, every test was memorization anyway. I learned ABSOLUTELY ZERO about marketing from those classes. Between financial analysis and common sense, the BS is piled on thick. Yes, the statement could be made that college is not for the teachers to force information on the student, but rather the students responsibility to learn it. I wish i could poll every student on campus to ask them their opinion because I’m 100% positive theirs is like mine. I thought “hey i can get good grades, get my degree, find a well paying job.” I have been an entitled asshole, but i can change.

Words of wisdom from a vet:
entitlement will get you nowhere, go learn something
networking is more than knowing someone, its a mutual respect
get involved in anything and everything you feel will help you in your future career.
Plan backwards: Job>Skills>Education>You. Know what your ending is and learn skills that will help you achieve that goal.

Thoughts to self:
- I believe in the new era of marketing, permission marketing
-I believe that higher education is a failure in its immediate business/ learning structure
——————————————————————————————-
Everything can be done more efficient.
I feel strongly about setting ones career path, having a plan, lack of learning in college.
Control your own destiny and be passionate about it.
High school students need a structured guide for paths to choose when they graduate
Its never too late to start anything.
